UV Safety Awareness Month

Yippee! It is Summertime and many have been waiting for its arrival. As you and your family take part in being out in the sun and participate in all the fun, here are a few tips to keep safe. It is important to note that according to the Skin Cancer Foundation, there are 5,000,000 cases of non-melanoma treated annually. 90% of non-melanoma skin cancer cases are associated with UV {ultraviolet} radiation.

There are 3 types of UV {ultraviolet} rays:

  • UVA rays which are ‘aging rays’ and they pass easily through the ozone. Most sun exposure is from this type. The result can be wrinkles and skin aging. These are the rays that tanning beds use.
  • UVB rays which are ‘burning rays’ and they are very dangerous. They are associated with melanoma skin cancer, cataracts, sun burn with tan-red colored skin.
  • UVC rays which are the most dangerous and they are thankfully, blocked by the ozone layer.

Broad spectrum sunscreen and UV sunglasses are great methods of protection.
