Creating the Right Appetite

Just something I had in my head in the middle of the night....

Are we eating right or are we thinking we are right in our eating?

There is a difference. Eating right follows the Eatwell plate model. In case you don't know the guidelines it consists of:

  • 3-4 servings vegetables/ day,
  • 4 servings fruit/ day,
  • 8 glasses of water
  • 2-3 servings milk/ dairy products/ day,
  • 6 servings grains/day,
  • 3-4 servings nuts/week
  • 3-5 servings lean meat/ poultry or fish per day,
  • 2 fats/ oils a day and
  • 3-4 sweets/week.

Perhaps are we listening to our own thoughts and directives? This can sound like "Am I hurting anyone else eating like this?";"Well it's what I had a taste for."; "Didn't everyone fall off track with all the COVID stuff?" And we can't forget my favorite top three: "I will start tomorrow."; "I haven't gone to the store." and "It costs too much to eat healthy."

Proverbs 14:12 says it like this: "There is a way which seemeth right unto a man But the end thereof are the ways of death." Our general physicians cardiologists pulmonologists and the like are constantly stating that we could shed 10-25 pounds for optimal health and exercise.

I know summer is around the corner June 21st to be exact. With that so are the birthdays graduations weddings showers barbecues family reunions vacations and any other reason we can think of to gather together and eat. Let us redirect our nutritional GPS and focus on our health.

Here are a few tips:

  •  More water than soda. You can season your water with fruits and/or fresh mint sprigs. Drink after you eat and not during.
  • Eat until you are content not until stuffed. Push back from the table.
  • Every now and then skip a meal and turn your plate down and let God be your sustenance.
  • Just because it's there does not make it a requirement to eat.
  • Take a 10-15 minute walk after eating. Do not lay down.

1 Corinthians 10:31 says: "So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do do it all for the glory of God."

Enjoy the upcoming seasons; enjoy the entire year. But whenever and wherever you eat or drink eat healthy and honor God's temple.
